It is for times like these that I am thankful to have my camera beside the bed...if you have to get up at the crack of dawn, it's nice to have a friend or two waiting to greet you, don't you think?

How's your transition to September going? The temperature has cooled, the days seem shorter and the structure of the school year is on us. So far, so good here, although secretly I'm missing having both kids home!! How about you?

It seems like ages since I've sat down to do anything at my computer. I took an unplanned hiatus just from being too busy with the kids and their schedules! I chose not to fight it and go with the flow and ended up having a fantastic week...

Canada's Wonderland was a highlight. Max had been invited for a friend's birthday so Liv and I decided to tag along. I wasn't sure how we'd make out with the heat and long lines but it was pure excitement and fun!

Happy Monday!

We are under overcast skies today, but nothing can dampen our victories over the weekend. Max played his final football game and they came out on top (by 1 point!!). It was a fantastic game with both sides (it was 3 on 3) playing their hearts out and really working together on every play. It is really wonderful to see a group of kids so supportive of each other through the good plays and not so good ones too. I was thoroughly impressed that they kept going despite the extreme heat!

Liv has conquered the pool! She has shed all of her floating contraptions and is able to swim unaided. She's even managed to pull off a backwards somersault if you can believe it!

A simple gold post; these were Olivia's earring of choice.

After at least a year of wearing small stickers on her ears, she now has the real deal! She wanted to know how it would all play out, down to how the piercing gun worked. Once all of her questions were answered, she was ready. She was completely brave and shed no tears while getting them pierced.

Here she is, in all her big-girl glory with her shiny new golden earrings!

First Aid Finds

Did I mention that I produced a photo shoot last week? We did a 3 day location shoot in Toronto and had an absolute blast. A fantastic crew, many of whom I have known for 10 plus years, great clients (always a blessing) and the BEST location! The homeowners were very generous allowing us to shoot in all parts of their converted industrial space. The home is a vintage-lovers paradise...a mix of fantastic finds from old school maps and globes to this super fun montage of First Aid items on display in the powder room.

One Busy Week

I just knew that this week was going to be a hectic one! I hope everyone has had a good week and survived the incredible heat wave we've had here!

Here's a quick look at how the week started...ripping out a bathroom! It's so exciting to see a project get started after months of planning! I"m hoping to get some more 'during' pictures for you without becoming too much of a pest to the guys that are so busy working away....

We're all in masks because of the lovely fibre glass insulation in the ceiling...what a messy job! I really give these guys a lot of credit; they work tirelessly through some very unfavourable conditions and still seem to be smiling at the end of the day. Here's to a great (albeit busy) week and a restful weekend ahead!

Weekend Snippets - Part One

Well! Was your weekend as good as mine? I confess, I took a bit of an extra long one this weekend and thoroughly enjoyed every single moment! I am still in the process of going through all my pictures but I thought I'd share a bit of our Canada Day Firework Extravaganza!

It wasn't really an extravaganza but it was fun anyway! A couple of packs of sparklers, a lighter and a camera are really all you need. We did have a quick lesson on why we don't touch the end of sparklers, nicely demonstrated by Olivia on her first attempt but other than that we came out unscathed. Max was most impressed by the shots I took of them whirling the sparklers around. I confess, it was fun and I'll take any cool points I can get from my budding pre-teen!
I've got a crazy week this week so I will forwarn you that the postings could be few and far between. Who knows though...it's at times like these I tend to be my most productive!! Time will tell...

My two kids are well out of diapers but I have some friends who are still very much in the thick of it! When Liv was a baby, I desperately wanted to put her in gdiapers (a completely earth-friendly hybrid diaper out of Australia) but they were not available anywhere in Canada at the time. The thought of driving to the states was a bit too daunting so I continued on with disposables and felt bad the whole time.

I may have changed my tune if these little numbers had been available! Can you stand how cute these are? Every baby bum deserves a green, environmentally friendly, completely adorable daiper such as these.

Hello, hello! Fletcher-Rae Interiors + Design is the name of my company and I'm so excited to give you a sneak peak at some of my interiors that I've had photographed recently. Two very different locations and two very different clients. The first 3 shots are from an avid art collector's house who wanted to showcase her collection and have a more streamlined decor throughout the living area. With a fresh colour palette, new lighting, custom cabinetry and comfy yet modern furnishings we certainly got exactly what she was aiming for!

The above photo is from my former business partner's converted garage. Streaming light from the hinged garage door. Glassy, polished concrete floors (love), the most stunning table from E15 and a shot of colour, care of the Moooi chairs. An industrial space done right!

A Fresh Start

I wanted to give you guys a quick peak into one of the projects that I've been working on. I'm sure you've heard me mention working on a teen's room. Well here is the before...

and here is where we are now!

The millworkers installed the units (including a built-in bed, window seat and fantastic desk/wall unit!) and now it's time for the fun to start! We'll be spending the next little while re-organizing everything and getting some fun new textiles and storage items. I'll be sure to keep you up to date on our progress...

I love that my client at 13 years old embraced such a bold print and hasn't looked back. What do you think so far? Would you do this for your room or let your teenager take the reins on a bedroom project?

Around The House

What an amazing morning it is here. The sun is shining and there is the most perfect breeze blowing in through the kitchen window. Today I wanted to share with you a few of my favourite spots around the house. The first spot is at the top of the 2nd floor landing. This whole floor is dedicated to the kids; their rooms, their toys, their playroom....

and their art. I have chosen to display these fantastic canvases that the kids have done over the years above this simple Ikea cabinet that houses DVD's + Blurays. The lamp has moved with me from house to house and was made by my grandfather from an old bottle of Vat 69 whiskey.

This is one of the bookshelves in Olivia's room. She is an avid collector of nearly everything and although at times it drives me round the bend, I love how passionate she is for all things small.

This butterfly mobile is a new addition to the house. My mum recently returned from a 2 week cruise through the Panama Canal and she brought this back for Olivia. I love the simple design of the butterflies and the easy neutral tones of the shell. This is something I'm sure Olivia will cherish her whole life and a piece that she can always display no matter her age or her living arrangements...

This is how I found the cat (he's just sleeping!) on Saturday morning just after the kids had woken up. I had such a hard time taking these photos because I was laughing so hard. I am convinced that Smith thinks he is human. Maybe this is what happens when you assume the role as cat-mother from such an early time in their lives!

Fun fairs, face painting and a quick 24 hour flu is how we spent our weekend. I've spared you photos of the flu portion but the rest of the highlights are great! We've been going to Max's school fun fair for 5 years and his goal is always to win a cake at the Cake Walk game. I am thrilled to tell you that after years of disappointment and going home empty handed he finally won the coveted cake prize.

We had a great weekend despite Liv coming down with the flu and made the most of our time together. We rested and watched movies and waited for her sickness to pass...we all feel better now!

How My Garden Grows

So, as I mentioned last night, I did a bit of experimenting yesterday with the new camera outside. I didn't have a very large window of opportunity because the majority of the day was a sopping wet mess but what I was able to get I am really happy with.

The garden itself is quite small and as I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, I stay away from any delicate flowers because of all the sports action that the backyard gets. I've planted some fresh herbs, two strawberry plants as well as a tomato + cucumber plant. So far everything is doing really well with very little tending to.

This magnificent rose bush was here when we bought the house and so it has stayed and is doing brilliantly! It is covered with so many blossoms right now all the most vivid shade of pink. It's such a refreshing pop of colour in a mostly green backyard.

All of these photos were taken with the new camera and I have left them completely un-retouched or enhanced, cropped etc. This is what I got from my first real foray out and about with the Canon...I am inspired!

So far, I am super impressed with my new camera! Here is the first shot I took (before reading any of the manual). The skin tones and clarity are great and the colour in general is so much better.

I did some experimenting today outside to see how the depth of field is on this lens and to get a feel for how it shoots in daylight. I can't wait to share the results...

Where did yesterday go? I was out all day overseeing tile pick-up/drop off, coordinating furniture deliveries and picking up my brand new Canon!! By the time I got home in the late afternoon it was all I could do to feed the kids between playing with my camera and reading the manual...

I picked up the Canon Rebel XS for a song. I know I could have gone with the XSi but for what I need and for this awesome deal I couldn't be happier. I'm really looking forward to experimenting and capturing images that a point & shoot just can't get. Do any of you have any experience with this camera? Any pointers to get me up and running? A very unsettled and windy day here. I'm waiting for my camera battery to charge and enjoying a nice cup of coffee. The sun is trying to peak through the clouds and when it does it is quite strong and brilliant.
I am struggling to get some work done while trying to entertain Liv. She can be quite demanding (she's 4!). I've managed to get some invoicing completed and now just need to do some filing (urgh)...I hope the start to your week has been a good one. I'm happy to get this paperwork out of the way early on so I can enjoy more creative days ahead!

I am so excited to show off my brother and long-time friend Karl's latest published collaboration! It's a DC Comics, hardcover collection of the 12 week large-format newsprint series 'Wednesday Comics' that ran last year. The idea behind this was to pair up the top writers and artists with DC's super Superheroes like Superman and Batman and Karl and Brenden's hero the Flash! It is a truly awesome story and you can read more about the book here.

What a glorious weekend! We had such great weather and we were lucky enough to spend the majority of it outside...

Olivia had a great playdate, Max had flag football (which is so good!) and we got Smith a harness and tie-out for the backyard. He has been desperate to join us while we are outside but because we are located on the corner of a couple of busy streets I haven't let him out before. I wasn't sure how it would go (or if he'd even let me put the harness on) but he loves it! After only 2 days, he sits nicely while I put on his harness and has stopped trying to bite my hand off when I undo it...Has any one else had experience with a cat on a leash? Any tips or tricks to keeping them safe and happy?

This weather is making me smile!

It has been hot this week...hot and sticky. The kids have been playing in the sprinkler, the full-coverage sunscreen is now always within reach and there has been little to no action in the kitchen! We've been taking our cooking outside - it's barbeque season!! I am inspired to freshen up our tiny yard: add more shade (it gets too hot back there!), have some portable and cozy seating areas for reading and relaxing and make it a place where we all want to be. Rainbow Cake

Here is Liv's Birthday cake! My sister-in-law made this after the request for a rainbow cake was given at last years party. Olivia remained committed to the rainbow cake idea all year and added the sun idea just the other day.

The cake itself was chocolate with a peanut butter buttercream filling and rainbow coloured fondant. The rainbow portion was set on another layer (the cloud) of chocolate cake, iced with an italian meringue. This cake was beyond decadent and beyond delicious. Thanks Ang!

Liv is turning 4 on Saturday and I am in full-swing prep mode for her parties (did you see how that is plural?!). Tomorrow kicks off the festivities with all her little girlfriends. I've been preparing butterfly trinket boxes, cupcakes, flower lollies and monogramed gift bags...I'm exhausted.
I am feeling like this is a big birthday (for me!). My baby isn't a baby anymore and she is my last. Thank goodness my girlfriend is due any day now so I can get my fix from her new bundle...
It's exciting to see them grow up and kind of sad when we realize just how fast time passes.
I will enjoy these next few days and document it all...stay tuned!

I have avoided any use of delicate, pretty plants in our backyard because they would be destroyed by soccer balls, footballs or kid's feet within days! The marigold is Olivia's (she only wanted 1) and I've also stuck a strawberry plant in there for fun. The yard itself is quite small and every inch of it gets used when we're playing. There are so many things I'd like to do back here but feel my energy is better spent enjoying the kids play than worrying about how my flowers are doing.

I'm in the market now for a clever sun-shade...any ideas?

I loved this weekend! The weather was perfect, the gardening was great and the kids spent most of their time outside which means happy, not bored children that sleep really well (in their own beds!). How about you? What fun did you get up to? I think for me, the only thing that could have made the weekend more perfect would have been to have friends round for dinner...It's ok though because next weekend promises to be filled with lots of fun and people while we celebrate Liv's 4th Birthday!!

What a glorious Friday we are having...so glorious in fact that I've spent most of it outside and away from my computer. That, I tell you, is something to smile about!

This group partners with women around the world in the production and marketing of one-of-a-kind goods. They currently have hand-embroidered bracelets from Palestine and fantastic hoop earrings from Rwanda.

It's everywhere right now. White, puffy dandelion fluff is floating all around us...my lawn, my neighbour's lawns as well as the parks are covered in them! I've always had a soft spot for them though. They provide hours of fun for kids and are really pretty before they seed. I know they drive a lot of people nuts so I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on these exceptionally viable weeds? Do you have a secret method to keeping them at bay or perhaps an all natural remedy to ridding them from your lawn? I'd love to know...

I was completely side-tracked today...my little Smith went to get neutered. I was completely un-focused and just couldn't complete a sentence for my posts! He's home now and wearing the cone of shame till he stops licking...

I am so gratetful to the Humane Society for passing on the numbers of some local, completely affordable offices that do the procedure. They did a great job, were very professional and were loving and wonderful with the pets that were there. Smith is resting now and happy to be home!

Quick & Easy Salad

Sometimes I'm honestly at a loss when trying to figure out what to serve to accompany my main courses. I tire easily of the potato, rice, couscous thing and am always looking for a way to get some more veggies into all of us. We eat really well but there are times (like last night) when we get home late and everyone is famished and I have no time to prepare anything. This is super quick and uses up some fridge and pantry staples. Feel free to substitute your favourite vegetables or whatever you may have lying around! I tend to eyeball the dressing and go with the less is more attitude for this salad, especially when using ripe tomatoes.

Quick & Easy Salad

1/2 cucumber, quartered & sliced

1/2 red onion finely diced

1/2 red pepper diced

2 tomatoes, chopped

1/2 cup chick peas, drained & rinsed

handful of fresh arugula leaves

scattering of feta cheese

combine all ingredients in a bowl and toss. drizzle with olive oil (roughly 1/4 cup), red wine vinegar (2 tblsp) and salt & pepper to taste.

I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend and enjoyed Mother's Day. My kids woke up and it took them a good 2 hours before they realized it was Mother's Day (hilarious!). They outdid themselves though this year (well, along with my husband - thanks!) with a beautiful card, new Jamie Oliver cookbook and a gift card towards a new camera...yeah!!! The best part was there was little to no fighting and we were all together.
We were busy as well this weekend. It started with a fantastic party at a girlfriend's house (lots of talented women and lots of conversation), another girlfriend's baby shower and ended with a visit to family in Niagara. Aside from the cold temperatures and tornado-like winds it was a perfect weekend...

A Quick Project

Since the birth of my daughter (nearly 4 years ago!!) the amount of things 'butterfly' has increased dramatically in this household. Come to think of it, there was nothing butterfly in here till she came around. Last year for Mother's Day, I was given the most gorgeous card, so beautiful I just had to frame it. Well, it's taken me a while (12 months) but thanks to a quick trip to Ikea, here it is!

To add to the collection, I picked up a set of Martha Stewart Butterfly Stickers and stuck a couple on my Ikea lamp. It adds a hint of whimsy, Olivia loves it and that's good enough for me! The boys in the house haven't said anything negative about it so I think that's a good sign...

I've done this for both of my kids and it was the best idea. Looking back at those tiny sets of fingers and toes gets me everytime...

versatile sarong

I love clothes that are forgiving and always look great. Your body has been through a lot and it takes a while to get back to where you feel it should be (or at least comfortable with). Give a new mum a gorgeous sarong that can be worn loosely wrapped at the waist, as a dress (with some fancy tying!), covers you up while nursing and is great for an impromptu picnic or light-weight baby blanket. I've cherished mine through the years and still use the ones I was given after my son was born. Further to this, an afternoon out shopping sans baby is also a great idea! Treat mum to lunch and a bit of a shopping spree at her favourite shop! You have no idea how much something new to wear is appreciated after having a baby!!

Lastly, you can't go wrong with a lie-in and breakfast in bed. A morning spent relaxing is a luxury for a new mum (well any mum, really!) and the thoughtfulness of breakfast in bed is priceless!

I love music...I grew up surrounded by it and crave it daily. I believe we all have our own soundtracks that we build as we move through life. Mine is varied but heavy on the singer/songwriter side! My parents were folk singers so this may have something to do with it :) I popped my iPod in the dock this afternoon and selected Jeff Buckley's 'Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk'. I happened upon this quaint on-line boutique while leafing through through the latest issue of Country Homes & Interios (UK). There was a small picture with a brief caption, but it caught my eye. With a couple of swift clicks I was brought to Pale and Interesting and promptly fell in love!

I think it was all of it...I'm hooked!

The boutique is run by a husband and wife team from Britain who curate the selection themselves . They do a great job of mixing old and new, the feminine with utilitarian, incorporating textures and materials to create an individual and personal selection. Oh - I'm having a bit of a crush on Mod Green Pod and their fantastic line of eco-friendly products!

I found the Texas-based company while searching for a greener alternative wallpaper for one of my clients. Co-founded by sisters-in-law Nancy & Lisa Mims in 2005 in the hopes to fill the gap of high style products that are healthier for our homes (and loved ones!). How these two have delivered!!

Mod Green Pod offers textiles that are woven and printed in the US, on 100% certified organic cotton that is produced in the US as well. The prints are fun, graphic and sophisticated at the same time. Offered in a soft but sturdy upholstery weight cotton making it perfect for everything from your throw pillows to an upholstered chair or headboard. I am seriously considering a re-do of my dining chairs as an excuse to get some of this!!

The wallpaper is about as great as it gets! Fantastic motifs and colour-ways that are printed in non-toxic inks with a water-based glaze and absolutely no vinyl or PVC's!! Yeah! We're going with the Grand Jubilee in licorice/natural...stunning.
I just want to add as well that my client's daughter chose the pattern and colourway in the end. She is 13 years old and this is for her bedroom! As a designer, I knew she couldn't go wrong with any of the options and the room creator feature on the website empowered her and allowed her to trust her instincts.

The Importance of Earth Day

I had a moment yesterday to browse through some articles on-line and was stopped here on the home page of Whole Living with the simple question 'Is Earth Day Still Important?'...
Well, of course it is! Isn't it?

This really got me thinking. We've been celebrating Earth Day for 40 years now and over that time we have seen too many oil spills, melting glaciers, temperature changes and crazy increases in our carbon emissions. As a whole, we take this one day every year (sometimes it can be the week, like at my son's school) to profess our love of nature and our planet and promise to do a better job in the coming years, but is this enough?

I started thinking of Wall-e (such a fantastic movie) and how our sheer negligence and need for more turn our planet into nothing more than a garbage heap, unable to sustain life. I think of the Lorax (Oh, how we love Dr. Suess here at home) and the truffula's and their plight to have clean air and water.

We need to collectively turn Earth Day into a daily event, striving to be better to our planet with everything we do. We need to teach our children about conserving our natural resources and help them to find ways of upcycling their possesions and things they bring home. We also need to listen to our children and their concerns and new ideas. They have no limits to their imaginations and haven't yet been discouraged by all the barriers that seem to be put up to help us live greener lives. They are enthusiastic about their futures and the possibilities are endless for them.

This Earth Day, what are you doing to celebrate the day? Have you made changes that are impacting your daily lives for the better? Do you have any hints or suggestions on how to sustain a green lifestyle? I think this is an important topic to consider not only this week but every week of the year. We can make a difference and make change for the better!

Time to Slow Down

I think somebody, somewhere is telling me to slow down a bit! Shortly after my Monday morning post was put up yesterday I took a certain little girl to the doctor's office. She woke up with the brightest red cheeks you've ever seen! We waited and waited and waited. She was so patient and happy...

and in our 2-plus hours of waiting, we read and sang and caught up. It was actually a really special time (well maybe not for all of the other people waiting!). She's got fifth disease! Have you ever experienced this? Apparently, it's quite common and generally once the distinctive red rash appears, you aren't contagious. We're not taking any chance for the next few days (just to be safe). So, my plans have changed a little for this week and I'll be sticking close to home with Liv. We'll get some gardening done and maybe some fun craft projects.

I'm sure I'll manage to get some work in here and there!

Mondays Can Be Tough

I didn't take a single picture this weekend!! I ended up feeling quite dreadful by Friday at dinnertime (I couldn't even get through a bowl of my favourite homemade soup and fresh bread) and was quite sure I was suffering some flu bug by 9PM that night.

I was feeling better by mid-day Sunday but it really messed up my whole weekend...I'm still playing a bit of catch up this morning.

I'm looking forward to a fun week though! I'm preparing for a mom to mom sale for next weekend (hoping to take some new jewelry) and also my mum and I are going to see the King Tut exhibit at the AGO in Toronto! It's also Earth Day this coming Thursday. Do you have anything special you do to celebrate the day? Any new commitments you are making to live a greener life?

Things that make me smile

I received a notice yesterday from my friend Karl that his amazing weekly web-comic 'The Abominable Charles Christopher is going to be made into a book (well the first 2 years anyway!)...I am so happy for him. I don't remember a time when Karl was not in my life and I also don't remember a time when he wasn't drawing comics. He's been drawing professionally for 15 years doing everything from Superman, The Flash, Teen Titans and the new 'Marvel Kid's' line featuring Spider-Man!!

Charles Christopher is like little slices of life played out weekly through a cast of animal characters. It is beautiful, touching, hillarious and sometimes sad.

A Magical Backyard

I've spent some time today conjuring up a landscape plan for our backyard (it leaves a bit to be desired right now) and was inspired to create a magical nook for the kids. Max may not get as much use of it as Liv will but I imagine he'll enjoy it in his own way. We don't have a ton of room but I am determined to make the most of it!

I happened upon this site earlier and found the most amazing products to indulge my 'fairy garden' idea. I would love to build a small playhouse outside since we don't have the space for a swing-set. It would do double duty as it could also function for toy/sports equipment storage in the winter! We could add fun accents such as this elfin door and bird feeder. Perhaps some twinkle lights and painted stepping stones that the kids make would be ideal as well. I think this would be a fun project to do over the next month or so; dreaming up new and exciting things to add to entice fairy creatures to our yard!

My brother and I had 60 acres of playground growing up and it was everything from Little House on the Prairie to the far corners of the galaxy for us. Some of my fondest childhood memories take place in that yard and I'm hoping to create the same thing for my kids, on a much smaller scale!

A Day Late

I spent the day yesterday shooting a couple of my interiors with photographer Andrew Grinton. Andrew is one of my favourites! He's got a great eye for composition, a wonderful sense of flow and the ability to make a difficult shot work and he does it all with a smile on his face! I grabbed a few quick shots (they are unstyled!!) to show you and can't wait to see the finals. I'll be sure to keep you posted...

Wow - 100 posts already! I can clearly remember sitting down to my first entry and hoping that things would go ok...I loved it then and I love it even more now!
This blogging community is quite incredible and I'm hoping that with my next 100 posts I can contribute more to inspire and engage my readers. I'm also hoping to spread the word about Lille Mor and broaden my readership. It's nice to set goals and have something to work towards.

Today, I'm hoping to help spread the news of this little boy name Liam. Liam is 6 years old and has a very rare neuromuscular disorder called Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2. His mum is part of the handmade community at Satsuma Press (gorgeous letterpress!) and is trying to raise money to remodel the bathroom this summer so it will be full- access for Liam. As a mum myself, this touched me more than you can know. I want Liam to have this bathroom. I want his mum to be able to give this to him because they both deserve it!! I want this amazing community to embrace this family and help them. Spread the word and donate if you can...Good luck Lynn!!

This home tour from Martha Stewart popped into my inbox late yesterday and after the kids had gone to bed I sat with my laptop and perused the photos.

I was immediately drawn to this house and it's clean lines and un-fussy decor. It just looks good!

After going through the images once, I went back to look at the art and it's placement throughout the rooms. In the main foyer, propped and framed prints make for easy rotation and complimentary groupings. It's not always neccesary to hang your art.

Free standing storage units have come such a long way in recent years. Our options now seem endless, spanning from modern to traditional to cottage to vintage to industrial and varying as much in price as they do in style. You can find nearly everything your looking for if you don't mind a bit of legwork. Today I've pulled together some great options from some of the better known shops as well as some you may not have heard of (yet!). I love the option of a good free-standing unit. You can take it with you when you move, it (generally) is less of an investment, and can function in varying rooms if you are a serial decorator (you know who you are!). These units help to corral your items and display them beautifully and give you a certain amount of flexibility that a built-in unit cannot.

I was out this morning running errands and I overheard a conversation between a couple of mums discussing how overwhelmed they were with the amount of 'things' that end up lying around the house. Paperwork and mail, shoes and keys, bookbags and toys...the list can go on and on. The conversation really hit home with me both personally and professionaly. Most days, I feel the same way about my house. I know we have too many things for our space and at the moment, inadequate storage. I will remedy this in the future but now it drives me bananas!

This is also a subject that I spend the majority of my work days concentrating on. I've just wrapped up a mudroom/laundry room that needed some tweaking to better suit the homeowners lifestyle as well as a kitchen office nook that was functioning as only a drop zone for the entire family. It is often the small, over-looked areas that cause us the most distress. In my opinion, storage and how it will be used, is an integral, high priority topic when designing or decorating your home. You don't need an enormous budget, just a solutions-based game plan and an honest look at how you live and what you need to remedy.

Today I'm focusing on custom built-ins. The pictures I've included are all what I consider to be smart-plan solutions. They will all adapt over time with the changing needs of any given family. Remember that, it's key! What you need storage for now might be very different from what you will need in 5 years time...

While custom units do tend to be pricier than off the shelf pieces they also will give you exactly what you need and will look integrated into your home. Working with a professional for this is highly reccomended to ensure you get the most bang for your buck! It pays to have a new (and trained) set of eyes and ears to guide you through the process ensuring that all of the key issues are addressed.

This week has been an absolute blur and I'm so happy it's a long weekend! I've got a lot of catch up to do but I'm taking time to celebrate with family and friends and enjoy my son's 10th birthday. Asparagus

Perhaps like me, you are hosting Easter this year or maybe you are just looking for a quick and easy vegetable to serve during the weeknight rush. Well, look no further than asparagus. While it's available much of the year now, it's true season is in the spring. I love the versatility of this vegetable; grilled, sauteed, boiled or roasted it stands up to them all. Great in soups, salads, pastas and risottos as well as on it's own, asparagus is a perfect addition to your arsenal of quick and easy side dishes.

Asparagus is available in pencil thin, standard and jumbo sizes and all are great, just make sure you choose stalks that are firm and have tight tips. It's also important to make sure they aren't dried out!
My favourite quick and easy way to have asparagus is to grill them. Simple and delicious.

Grilled Asparagus
Asparagus (1/2 - 1 bunch depending on number of people)
olive oil
salt
pepper
freshly grated parmesan cheese
Preheat your barbeque. Coat asparagus spears in olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill over high heat until just tender, turning occasionally. Sprinkle with parmesan and serve warm. Perfect.

I love her work! The simple and subtle nature of her hand drawings I find particularly lovely. Her work is strongly influenced by nature and would be a breath of fresh air in any home.

With items available for the bedroom, kitchen and living areas of the house, along with yardage and a kids line (called Maramini!!), Mara is giving us all a reason to have a bit of Maramiki in our homes. Perfect for Spring, don't you think?

Spring Cleaning - Kitchen

Ahhh, Spring! A time of renewal and rebirth,warmer temperatures and fewer layers of clothes (hopefully). It's also a time when most of us are anxious to scrub and clean our homes, tidy our yards and streamline the amount of time doing inside work so we can get out and enjoy those longer days!

Personally, I can think of at least a thousand other things I would prefer to do than clean out a closet or scrub a toilet but it's got to get done! With two adults working from home, two kids and their stuff plus a cat there is always something that needs to be cleaned, picked up or put away...this is just life.

Over the years I have found some small things that help to make these daunting tasks a little more tolerable. I figured we start with the kitchen because this is our most used room in the house...

A sturdy caddy to carry all of your products: make sure it fits under your sink or some other handy spot to keep everything contained and easy to find.

Cleaning cloths: I love a good linen cloth for drying and cleaning up. They are amazing at holding water, leave no lint and have a better shelf life than most other cloths. I recently found these gorgeous cloths by Jagneus Designs out of England. They are made of natural materials, are bio-degradable, machine washable and come in the BEST colours!!

Caldrea

This is my weak spot! I'm a sucker for a nice, environmentally friendly cleaning product and Caldrea is my favourite! The scents are the best and they really do a great job at cleaning. Also, they don't strip my hands completely dry (this is a big thing for me because my hands are in bad shape )...my next best product is Clorox Green Works. Budget friendly and hard working, these products are a kitchen and bathroom staple!

latex gloves

These are my new favourite cleaning accessory! Thin, latex gloves. They're like the ones that doctors and dentists use. My husband has a laugh at me when I slap these babies on - but they do the trick! They protect these severely damaged hands and they aren't all big and bulky like the regular kitchen gloves.

lamp berger

I love my lamp berger! It gets out the toughest cooking odour and just makes the house feel cleaner! Especially great before guests arrive or during the winter when it's too cold to open all the windows to let the fresh air in. I recommend one of these for every home!

My cleaning caddy and supplies, composter and bags. They're all here, in one place, under the sink! Makes my life easier for sure...

Simply the best kitchen solution for a house full of recyclers! A slim line, door mounted container to collect all of our recyclables. Once it's full we make a trip to the larger bins in the garage. It keeps everything off the counter (counterspace is at a premium in our kitchen!) or just piling up in other areas.

These are a few of my favourites and they make the daily task of keeping the kitchen clean just a bit easier! I'm not looking to have a spotless house (I'm more realistic than that!) just clean and as tidy as we can do on any given day.

Happy dreary Monday...
urgg. What an unispiring day we've woken to here. It's been a very wet and chilly weekend and to be honest, we spent a large portion of it in the house. We ventured out a couple of times for some paint (a new project for later this week!), food and to look at toys. It's going to be a very busy week though so no time for dragging around!
My friend Jules Power is having her debut at Toronto Fashion Week tonight, Easter preparations are in full swing (at least in my head), I have a ton of interior work to do but most importantly, Max is turning 10!!

Whew...this is a big birthday. Double digits. I can't believe it!
I'm getting prepared to make my lists for the week in the hopes that I don't overlook anything! Wish me luck!!

Things that make me smile

Spring Jam 10'

A good friend of mine from my childhood has spear-headed this awesome tribute concert that is taking place in the Niagara Region April 9th and 10th...

What really makes me smile about this (other than the fact there are a ton of great local artists playing and it will be such a great time!) is that they are doing this to raise funds for the Canadian Red Cross and their disaster relief efforts in Haiti! Tickets are a steal for $12 (advance) or $15 at the door. If you are local or are interested in taking a trip to beautiful St. Catharines this Spring, why not plan for the weekend that Spring Jam is on? Go see the sights, do a wine tour maybe and then pop over to Robertson Hall (85 Church St., St. Catharines) to enjoy an evening of fantastic music and to do just a little bit more to help those struggling in Haiti.

The tiling is all complete now (I ended up doing the laundry room too!) and it looks great. The grout will be done this morning so by this afternoon I should have everything back to normal in the kitchen. Can't wait to share the final results! See you in a bit...
